Support for Special Needs in the Erasmus+ Programme
Erasmus+ pays special attention to guidance, inclusion, physical accessibility, pedagogical and technical support, and, most importantly, to the financial support of students and staff whose physical, mental, or health-related conditions are such that their participation in the programme would not be possible without additional funding (hereinafter referred to as “students and staff with special needs”). The aim is to enable you to fully benefit from the Erasmus+ mobility experience.
By signing the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), every higher education institution commits to ensuring equal access and opportunities for participants from all backgrounds and statuses. This means that students and staff with special needs can make use of the support services that the host institution offers to its own students and staff.
Additional Financial Support
Once selected for mobility, and before your departure, you may apply for additional Erasmus+ financial support for your access needs during mobility. This is an extra grant on top of the regular Erasmus+ mobility grant for studies/internships or staff mobility. To apply for this additional support, you must specify your needs and estimate the extra costs related to your physical, mental, or health-related condition during the preparation phase of your Erasmus+ mobility.
What Are Your Access Needs?
Depending on individual circumstances, eligible expenses for additional financial support during Erasmus+ mobility may include, but are not limited to:
-
- Adapted accommodation
- Travel assistance
- Medical care
- Additional equipment
- Adapted learning materials
- An accompanying person, etc.
How to Apply?
Ask the Erasmus+ coordinator at your home institution for assistance in completing the application form.
Information for outgoing students and staff is available from the Erasmus+ coordinator or on the university website under Student Guidelines, which form part of each call for applications.
Explore the MapAbility online tool developed by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN), which maps the accessibility of higher education institutions and their services to help you decide on your mobility destination.
Additionally, students have created the Student Toolkit website, which brings together useful advice and information to support your educational journey.
